Customer Review: Very very sympathetic!!!

I found this book to be the most compassionate skincare book I have ever read. I f you have ever suffered from this disease, you will a) bawl with relief and b) get down on your knees and fervently thank the publishers of this book. Dr. Fulton was motivated to study dermatology and specifically acne because he himself suffered from a debilitating case of it. He describes his personal experiences of shame and frustration ( he has photos of himself with acne - ugh - what doctor or person would dare to do that??) and those of his patients with deep empathy and insight. How many times have you gone to yet another unsympathetic dermatologist and been handed a prescription merely to shut you up? or used OTC products only to find you are getting worse or staying the same???

I found this book book to be extraordinarily helpful, especially the following:
1) Dr. Fulton recommends using ice as an inexpensive treatment on pimples and cysts - it takes away swelling and kills the top layers of cells to help bring up/relieve the impaction - he uses in his own clinical practice
2) Did you know that Retin-A (which he co-invented, along with Benzol Peroxide - he got himself degrees in dermatology and chemistry in order to tackle this disease) comes in two different forms - cream and gel. The cream formula is acnegenic - but the gel isn't.
3) benzoyl peroxide is an extremely effective treatment - but is often "housed" in a formula that is acnegenic, esp. over-the-counter product - that is why it doesn't work!!!!!
4) A lot of products that are labelled "non-comedogenic", esp. cosmetics that are advertised as such, ARE NOT - and Dr. Fulton does testing in his lab, and shows how you can do simple tests/read ingredients on your cosmetics to see if they are.
5) Dr Fulton will not treat any patient who works a night shift and suffers from acne. He has found in his practice that nite work disrupts our natural biologic clocks - that it simply intereferes with the support your body needs in order to properly manage your treatment.
6) Mineral oil sold in the US is non-comedogenic (still probably not good for you since it is petroleum - but better than something that makes you break out like crazy)

I cannot emphasize enough how this book has helped me. I have suffered from acne since I was an adolescent and I am now 37!!! I still get zits, but I have more effective information and tools to use now that I have been educated properly. I use some of Dr. Fulton's products, and some others (DDF bp cleansers) that I think work great because I apply to other products the info that i learned from this book. Please disregard the other review - I truly believe that this person was not willing to do the work that is required to manage this disease.

Customer Review: Very Vague, Out To Sell His Products

I wish I had looked to see if this book was at my library before I bought it (which I now know it is). It is worth reading, but the advice is lacking. There is a list of over 100 ingredients to look for in skin care products, which I found hard to compare to products in the store. The web sites and e-mail are given with the book, but I found neither any help in furthering advice on products.

It seems as though Dr. Fulton only wants to help people through the sale of his own product line. When I e-mailed for more information on products available in the store, my question was disregarded and I was directed on how I could order his own line of products.

I was upset that I had to spend money on a book that only wants to help me by further profiting off me by my buying their products. I do understand acne better, but I had to pay for a book that seems like a sales pitch for his product line. Out of 300 pages, only 40 talk about treatment, and I think that could have been reduced. There seemed to be a lot of fluff.

A book that I do think is worth putting money into, because I constantly reference back to it, is Paula Begoun's "Don't Go To The Cosmetic Counter Without Me." I'm not really into "cosmetics" but she does talk about acne and her product reviews for cleansers, make-up removers, lotions, wrinkle creams, sun block, toners, men's and baby products, and just about anything you put on the skin are incredible.
